Aditya Roy Kapur is an Indian actor who was born on November 16, 1985, and is best known for his roles in Hindi movies. He started out as a VJ, but soon switched careers and became an actor. The 2009 musical thriller “London Dreams” was his first movie. The romantic hit “Aashiqui 2” in 2013 was his big start, though. During the same year, he got praise for his part in “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” the love comedy that also became his biggest hit. For his work, he won the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Even with these hits, Kapur had bad luck with movies like “Daawat-e-Ishq” (2014), “Fitoor” (2016), “Ok Jaanu” (2017), and “Kalank” (2019), which got bad reviews and didn’t do well at the box office. He came back strong with the horror “Malang” (2020) and the black comedy “Ludo” (2020). He was also praised for his part in the thriller series “The Night Manager” (2023).

Early life and family

His birthday is November 16, 1985, and he was born in Mumbai. Sumud Roy Kapur, his father, is a Punjabi Hindu, and Salome Aaron, his mother, is Jewish. Aditya is the youngest of three children. Siddharth Roy Kapur, his oldest brother, was the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and is married to actress Vidya Balan. Kunaal Roy Kapur, his second older brother, is also an actress.

The Aaron family, Aditya’s mom’s side, were famous dance teachers who brought the Sama dance to India. His brothers and he all went to the same school, G.D. Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, where his mother directed school plays.

Aditya first went to St. Xavier’s for Class XI, but he had trouble in school and had to switch to St. Andrew’s College to avoid losing a year. He finally got his diploma from St. Xavier’s College, which is connected to the University of Mumbai. He wanted to be a cricket player when he was in school, but he stopped taking cricket coaching classes after the sixth grade.

Career

Early work and acting debut (2004–2012)

Aditya Roy Kapur’s first job was as a VJ on Channel V India. His unique hosting style and ability to make people laugh won him praise. He was on TV shows like “Pakao” and in 2008, he co-hosted “India’s Hottest” with VJ Bruna Abdullah.

Aditya started acting when he had a small part in the 2009 musical drama “London Dreams” with Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin Thottumkal. Even though critics gave it mixed reviews and it did poorly at the box office, this was his first movie job.

He continued to work as an extra in two movies in 2010: “Guzaarish,” which starred Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, and “Action Replayy,” which starred Akshay Kumar. People liked Aditya’s acts in these movies, even though they didn’t do well at the box office. His performance in “Guzaarish” got the most applause. Khaleej Times called him “natural and vivacious,” saying that he perfectly captured the happy mood of the movie.

Breakthrough, success and struggles (2013–2019)

The movie “Aashiqui 2” (2013), in which he acted with Shraddha Kapoor, made Aditya Roy Kapur famous. The movie was a huge hit. In just four weeks, it made over ₹1.45 billion (US$18 million), making it one of the biggest hits in Bollywood history. Aditya’s performance was praised by critics. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama said he did a great job of playing the serious character, and Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times said he seemed sincere.

In the same year, Aditya played Avinash Arora in “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” a love comedy that became one of the most successful movies in Indian history and the most successful movie of Aditya’s career. Critics liked how he played the part; Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN said he was completely likeable, and Rachit Gupta of Filmfare said he did a great job.

As Tariq Haider, he played in the 2014 love comedy “Daawat-e-Ishq” with Parineeti Chopra. But the movie got average reviews and didn’t do well at the box office. Even though Aditya’s acting got good reviews, the main actress got all the attention.

Aditya played Noor Nizami in the 2016 romantic film “Fitoor,” which was based on the book “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens and starred Tabu and Katrina Kaif. Tabu and Aditya were praised by critics as the best actors in the movie. In addition, he had small roles in “Dear Zindagi” and “Welcome to New York.”

He played Aditya Gunjal in the 2017 romantic film “Ok Jaanu” with Shraddha Kapoor. The reviews for the movie were mixed. Some praised Aditya’s performance as an urban boy focused on his job, even though he had trouble with some emotional scenes.

As Dev Chaudhry, Aditya starred in the 2019 romantic thriller “Kalank” with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sonakshi Sinha. The movie did not do well at the box office, though, and got mixed reviews. Aditya did a great job as the good and lonely Dev who is stuck between two wives, according to the critics.

Recent work (2020–present)

In 2020, Aditya Roy Kapur had three movies come out. First, he played Adavit Thakur in the love action movie “Malang,” which starred Disha Patani. The reviewers gave him good marks for what he did. According to The Times of India, Aditya impressed them with how he played a character whose life was going through big changes. He did this with grace and restraint. He looked different in the action scenes, which made them more interesting, and his acting as a fearless vigilante was praised for being believable.

The next movie he was in was “Sadak 2,” a road movie with Sanjay Dutt and Alia Bhatt that first aired on Disney+ Hotstar. A lot of reviewers didn’t like the movie because they thought the story, acting, dialogue, and use of tired tropes were all out of date. A movie guide said it looked like it was made in a different era.

Aditya played Aakash Chauhan in “Ludo,” the last black comedy crime movie of the year. The lead part was played by Sanya Malhotra. While he was in The Wire, he was called the film’s “standout performer” for the confidence, humor, and ease he brought to his role.

The action movie “Rashtra Kavach Om” came out in 2022, and both Kapur and Sanjana Sanghi were in it. Few people liked the movie’s story, and it didn’t do well at the box office. India Today didn’t like the movie and said that Aditya Roy Kapur’s acting wasn’t good enough to make up for the dull plot.

Tom Hiddleston had played the same role in the British TV show “The Night Manager,” which he played in 2023. They all agreed that the version brought out the best in him, even if some thought he wasn’t quite as good as Hiddleston. He was also in the movie “Gumraah” with Mrunal Thakur. The movie didn’t do well at the box office, but he got praise for being honest in two very different parts.

Kapur’s next role will be in “Metro… In Dino” with Sara Ali Khan in 2024. Anurag Basu will be in charge of directing the movie.

In addition to being an actor, Aditya Roy Kapur is very interested in sports and helps a lot of different charities and groups. He has helped with projects like the “Pillars Of Humanity” by the Ankibai Ghamandiram Gowani Trust and often plays in charity football games. Aditya also cares about the earth; he and Pragya Kapoor planted 150 trees together.

Aditya went on the “Dream Team” tour in the US in August 2016, playing in different cities with Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, and Badshah, all of whom are famous from Bollywood.

Aditya has been on the Times 50 Most Desirable Men list many times. In 2018, he came in at number 28, in 2019, he was number 11, and in 2020, he was number 3. He also works with a number of brands as an ambassador, such as Nautica, Diesel, Oppo, and Slice. In 2019, he started his own clothing line called Single with the help of Universal Sportsbiz.

Because of his style and personality, Aditya has been recognized. Femina India named him one of the “Beautiful Indians 2022” and gave him the Standout Performer Of The Year – Male award for his work on and off the screen. He was also named one of the “Best Dressed Indians” of 2021 by GQ India.
